Electrathon 2003 - Electric Vehicle Council of Ottawa (EVCO)

News

< Photos now available! >

* Registration has been extended to Electrathon day - May 31.

* Rain or shine - come May 31. Location and schedule

Due to space and insurance limitations there will be no track competitions. Instead there will be technical evaluations and judging of the team vehicles followed by demonstration driving on a closed course (parking lot).

We will be featuring a series of guest speakers, forums, and films in the museum auditorium throughout the day. We will have an Electrathon roundtable to discuss the future of Electrathon in Ottawa. <see "future directions">

Some additional competition options:
(send your comments to: info@acclivity.ca):

  • Best technical inspection
  • Most innovative drive system
  • Best log-book
  • Best Electric-Assist Bicycle
  • Best electric control system
  • Most aerodynamic design

These ideas will lead the teams to improvement of vehicles, and sharing of knowledge and stimulation of design.

There will be a track available for demonstration driving of vehicles that pass the safety inspection.

Future directions:

A regular Electrathon event is a one hour endurance competition, typically run at higher speeds on a track. For those who would like to participate in 'regular' Electrathon events there are several options.

The Ottodrome (former Capital City Speedway) runs regular auto racing events every weekend starting at noon. There is a possibility to arannge for use of the track before noon, (say between 10-11am?) for Electrathon racing. Participants in our museum Electrathon event could arrange to race at the Ottodrome in one of tese ways:

  • Organize a single Electrathon track event on Sunday, June 1, 2003 for those competetors from out of town who are in town for the May 31 museum event. There is little time for technical inspections in the morning, bu the vehicles would have been inspected the previous day (Saturday) at the museum.
  • Arrange for regular (weekly or monthly) morning races at the Ottodrome for interested local and out of town competetors.
  • Run the Electrathon on a two year cycle. Year one (2003) event at the museum focusses on technical competition and information sharing, while year two (2004) focusses on the track event only. This approach provides teams more time to create and refine safe, track-ready vehicles.
  • Organize demonstration events, and fun days at the track where all classes of light electric vehicles can use the track on a periodic basis.
